Iran In FIBA Basketball World Championship: Fifth Report
(This is a guest post by Ali Karimi, who is a NY based basketball writer who has worked for CBS College Sports, Rivals Network, and NBA.com. He will be covering Iran for Radio Javan during the Fiba World Championships. He is the worlds foremost authority on Iranian basketball.)
The industry standard, that’s what Team USA is in the eyes of the
world. The opportunity to play the best in the world isn’t an everyday
occurrence, especially if your country hasn’t had formal relations
with the United States in over 30 years. On Wednesday September 1 at
high noon, Team Melli will play the most anticipated basketball game
in Iranian history. Abdi İpekçi Arena located in Istanbul, Turkey will
be the venue and domestically in the United States the game will be
carried in crystal clear high definition on ESPN.
Iranian fans are hungry to see how their team measures up against the
world powerhouse USA. Iran was on a 60 year hiatus from the
international stage before a remarkable run in the 2007 FIBA Asia
Championship to qualify for the Olympics. Placed in the daunting
“Group of Death” Iran would avenge their only tournament loss with a
74-69 win over Lebanon in the title game. Team Melli became the first
Western Asian team to win the tournament and in doing so punched their
ticket to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, their first Olympics since 1948.
Soon after the Olympics, Hamed Haddadi would become the first Iranian
to play in the NBA when he signed as a free agent with the
Association’s Memphis Grizzlies. The success snowballed and in 2009
Iran defended their Asian crown with an improbable upset of China in
China. Asia had taken notice, the Iranians were no fluke. Later that
year rising star Arsalan Kazemi would become the first native Iranian
to receive a Division I college basketball scholarship. A C-USA
All-Freshman Team selection, Kazemi was featured in an “Outside the
Lines Special Report” later that season. ESPN aired the piece during
College Gameday at Kansas St. on January 30, 2010. He is poised to
perhaps become the first Iranian ever drafted.
The already thin Iranian roster took another hit when starter Oshin
Sahakian went down with an ankle injury during the Tunisia game. This
injury coupled with the loss of Samad Bahrami and Hamed Afagh, now has
Iran down 3 starters. It will be up to Serbian born head coach Veselin
Matic to decide on inserting a bigger PF in the starting lineup,
either 6′11 Moosa Nabipour and 6′11 wide body Asghar Kardoust or going
smaller with 3 guards, with Saman Veisi most likely to be added to the
lineup.
Coach Matic has been really impressed with the play of Kevin Durant
and is worried about the speed of PG Derrick Rose. The multi faceted
Lamar Odom is another match up problem. If Iran can keep these players
in check, not stop them completely, that would be an unrealistic
expectation, then Iran can compete in this game. Nobody really has an
answer for a player like Durant. The 2 point win over Brazil will have
Team USA focused, they won’t overlook Iran. Iran will have their hands
full all day.
Iran has been installed as a heavy underdog, 40 points. This game isn’t about winning or losing. It’s about seeing how much further Iran has to go to be able to play with a team of the caliber of the USA. Iran isn’t just going to roll
over, they are gonna play hard and leave it on the court. Upset of the
century? I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.

Iran In FIBA Basketball World Championship: Fourth Report
(This is a guest post by Ali Karimi, who is a NY based basketball writer who has worked for CBS College Sports, Rivals Network, and NBA.com. He will be covering Iran for Radio Javan during the Fiba World Championships. He is the worlds foremost authority on Iranian basketball.)
Team Melli will be hungry for their first tournament win when they take on the upstart Tunisian National Team today at 12 pm EST in Abdi İpekçi Arena located in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Tunisians are competing in their first-ever FIBA World Championship. They defeated Cameroon 83-68 in bronze medal game of Afrobasket to qualify. Coach Adel Tlatli is the father of modern Tunisian basketball. The team has been under his guidance since 2004. This is his second stint as coach, he also held the title 2001. Led by guard Amine Rzig and forward Mohamed Hdidane, Tunisia will be the smallest team Iran will face, they average 6′6 as a team. The 7′1 Salah Mejri is Tunisia’s only answer for Hamed Haddadi. He won’t be much of an obstacle to the Iranian giant. Even the Iranian second team, lead by 6′11 bull moose Asghar Kardoust, will tower over the smaller Tunisians. Whereas the Croatians posed matchup problems for Iran, the Tunisians will be hard pressed to contain Hamed Haddadi in
the paint and bottle budding star Arsalan Kazemi. The X-factor will be pg Mehdi Kamrani. Kamrani’s shot selection has been awful. His shots really have had no chance of going in, they are drawing bottom iron, in some cases barely catching iron. He shot 3-12 from the floor last game, 0-4 from 3 point, with all his points coming when he drove to the basket. Iran is not getting to the foul line near enough to be competitive. Kamrani needs to be aggressive and attack the basket and
kick it out when appropriate while cutting down on turnovers. Oshin Sahakian has been rather quiet this tournament, look for some good production from him today.
This game is huge for both teams, Tunisia is looking for its first ever win in the tournament and Iran will be playing for the right to advance. A win here may make the final game against Slovenia an elimination game for the right to advance to the second round. If the Iranians get caught up thinking ahead to their September 1 clash with Team USA the Tunisians could pull the upset. Oddsmakers have installed Iran as a 5 point favorite, 2 possessions. Thats not a big margin or error. Turnovers will be key, Iran can’t afford to create a fast break for Tunisia. The Iranian depth chart is in constant flux, it seems Iman Zandi has fallen out of favor and Saman Veisi has taken those minutes. Irregardless, whomever is out there needs to play better perimeter defense and cut down the turnovers.
Tunisia will play hard and they should remain within striking distance of Iran in the first half. Iran should distance themselves in the third. Iran has too many comparative advantages to not exploit them. Barring a fourth quarter collapse, Iran gets a much needed win.
Score prediction: Iran 76 Tunisia 67
